Not a chain. An association
Relais & Châteaux was founded in France in 1954, when eight properties between Paris and Nice united under the slogan La Route du Bonheur — the Road to Happiness. They couldn't have known they were writing the first chapter of something that would reach every continent.
Today the Association brings together 580 independent properties across 65 countries — hotels and restaurants run by individuals who share one conviction: that hospitality is an art, better for being practiced with passion and care.
Every property is inspected. Membership is not purchased — it is awarded and maintained. The standard is the same in Burgundy or in Patagonia.
HOW LAS BALSAS JOINED · 1995
A membership earned on an ordinary day
One day in 1995, a guest checked in without saying who he was. He was the president of Relais & Châteaux.
There was no announcement, no inspection scheduled, no warning. He stayed as any guest would — and experienced the house exactly as it was, on an ordinary day.
He left convinced. That year, Las Balsas became the first Relais & Châteaux in Latin America — and has remained a member without interruption ever since, the longest-standing in the region.
